This conference assessed priorities for R&I, including measures outlined in the consultation on a National Research and Innovation Strategy.
It came as the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science continues to develop the new strategy, which will run to 2027.
Delegates discussed the development of the final strategy, priorities for its implementation, implications for policy and stakeholders - and what would be needed to achieve its key aims in the areas of tackling societal and economic challenges in the wake of COVID-19, growing capacity and capability, the workforce, public engagement and all-island and wider international collaboration and profile.
Sessions in the agenda focused on:
- the National Research and Innovation Strategy
- key issues for the innovation system
- EU R&I cooperation and global innovation partnerships
- the research workforce
We are pleased to have been able to include keynote sessions with: Peter Clifford, Head of Strategy, Science Foundation Ireland; and Signe Ratso, Deputy Director General, Research and Innovation, European Commission. This conference was chaired by Senator Aisling Dolan Member, Committee on Education, Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science; and Marc Ó Cathasaigh TD, Member, Committee on Education, Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science.
The conference was an opportunity for stakeholders to consider the issues alongside key policy officials who attended from the Department of Education; DAERA, NI; the Department for Communities, NI; the Department for the Economy, NI; the Department of Finance, NI; and BEIS.
