This conference discussed priorities for improving NHS estates, examining the plans for delivering the New Hospital Programme’s commitment to build 40 new hospitals by 2030.
Delegates looked at developing effective collaboration across the sector and with industry partners to enable innovation and standardisation, as well as aligning NHS estates with net zero goals and mitigating the impact of climate change.
Stakeholders and policymakers looked at involving healthcare professionals in decision-making processes, as well as in the planning and running of the new hospitals, with discussion on investment and funding of the programme, and industry involvement in this.
The agenda included a focus on catering to the needs of patients and staff, including priorities for patient safety, effective risk management, and developing new facilities, essential upgrades and modernisation.
It came as NAO’s progress report found that the Government has not delivered value for money so far and is not on track to meet targets by 2030. It was also an opportunity to assess progress on the wider Health Infrastructure Plan.
We are pleased to have been able to include keynote sessions with Lord Markham, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Department of Health & Social Care; Tim Phillips, Director, Health Value for Money Audit, National Audit Office; Dr Latifa Patel, Chair, Representative Body, British Medical Association; and Alan Morrison, Deputy Director, Health Infrastructure and Sustainability, Scottish Government Health and Social Care Directorate.
Overall, sessions in the agenda looked at:
- the New Hospital Programme: progress and developments - key challenges - the direction of policy and implementation
- assessing the NHS estate: current condition and key issues - priorities going forward
- examining the Programme: prioritisation, timing and investment decisions - staff, patient and wider stakeholder issues and engagement - meeting the demands of the future
- VFM: value for money and the New Hospital Programme
- implementation: project management, partnerships and the supply chain - priorities for innovation, and embedding safety, sustainability, and future-proofing - managing the transition
- policy: next steps for delivering new hospitals and wider transformation within the NHS estate
The conference was an opportunity for stakeholders to consider the issues alongside key policy officials who attended from the Cabinet Office; CCS; DHSC; HM Treasury; HSE; IPA; and NAO - as well as parliamentary pass-holders from the House of Commons.
