This conference will assess next steps for environmental standards in England.
It is bringing together stakeholders and policymakers to discuss the direction of government policy as the Environmental Improvement Plan is reviewed, with findings due to be published in due course, looking at priorities, practicalities and issues for implementation.
With the recent commitment to 30by30 by Government, sessions will discuss the ongoing development of a delivery strategy, considering the way forward for aligning conservation goals with existing mechanisms such as Environmental Land Management schemes and Biodiversity Net Gain. Areas for discussion include balancing competing land uses, securing buy-ins from land managers, and promoting voluntary participation in conservation efforts.
Options for incentives and support with issues such as additional bureaucracy will also be assessed, and how to best maintain business viability alongside environmental stewardship. We also expect discussion on funding priorities and opportunities for public-private collaboration to support nature recovery.
The agenda also includes a focus on broader considerations for policy in achieving effective long-term conservation and management, looking at the role of nature-based solutions in meeting environmental targets, and the contributions of farmers in reaching these goals. We expect discussion to bring out latest thinking on strategies for promoting nature-friendly farming, and optimising ELMs to deliver positive outcomes for farmers while contributing to food security and nature recovery. Approaches to addressing concerns about red tape and funding limitations - particularly for small and family-run farms - will also be considered.
