As the Ministry of Justice concluded its wide-ranging consultation; 'Legal aid: funding reforms', this seminar addressed the question of future funding priorities for the legal aid system. Timed as the system passed its 60th anniversary, panel sessions examined the proposals set out in the consultation paper, including the harmonisation of defence and prosecution fees and the introduction of Best Value Tendering. Discussions focused on what reform is necessary to guarantee access to aid whilst ensuring the system remains financially sustainable for the future.
