This conference examined the future of the UK’s audiovisual media sector in light of the ongoing progress of the Media Bill and its expected implementation in 2024.
It brought stakeholders and policymakers together to discuss key issues for implementation as the Bill continues progressing through Parliament, including for public service broadcasters and video on demand services, consumer choice, and market dynamics.
Delegates assessed changing definitions of prominence and the impact of the Bill on distribution supply chains, as well as the proposed VOD Code of practice for streaming services operating in the UK.
Further sessions examined the delivery of the new public service remit, with a focus on appropriate programme genres and thresholds for regulatory intervention.
Attendees considered the future of independent production across the UK, including proposals outlined in the Media Bill for measures to promote production outside of London and the South East.
We are pleased to have been able to include keynote sessions with: Anthony Szynkaruk, Director, Ofcom; Gareth Barr, Director of Policy and Regulation, ITV; Professor Catherine Johnson, Professor of Media and Communication, University of Leeds; and John McVay, Chief Executive, Pact UK.
The conference was an opportunity for stakeholders to consider the issues alongside key policy officials who attended from DBT; GLD; Isle of Man Government; NCSC; Ofcom; The Scottish Government; and the Welsh Government - as well as parliamentary pass-holders from the House of Lords.
