April 2022

The focus for this conference was priorities for future intellectual property and copyright regulation in the UK.

The discussion took place against the backdrop of policy initiatives aimed at reforming intellectual property, the design framework, and copyright regulation.

It was a timely opportunity to consider the key issues including:

  • regulation:
    • the evolving framework following the UK leaving the EU
    • regulation of IP and copyright going forward
    • potential changes to the design system, and protection for rights holders
  • innovation:
    • the role of IP and copyright regulation in supporting innovation and fostering economic growth
    • the Government’s strategy, including plans to:
      • improve IP education outreach to the business and research communities
      • support SMEs to commercialise their IP
      • ensure that intangible assets - including IP - are properly considered as part of lending decisions
    • creating an accessible design system that supports innovation and right protection
  • future-proofing - including the impact on IP of increasing use of Artificial Intelligence

We were pleased to be able to include keynote sessions with Tim Moss, Chief Executive Officer and Comptroller General, Intellectual Property Office; and William Bush, Senior Adviser to the Premier League and Chair, Alliance for Intellectual Property.

The agenda also included contributions from ACID; Alliance for Intellectual Property; BT; Fashion Roundtable; Gowling WLG; HarperCollins; Lewis Silkin; Wikimedia UK; and the World Intellectual Property Organization.

The conference was an opportunity for stakeholders to consider the issues alongside key policy officials who attended from the House of Commons Library and officials from BEIS; DCMS; the IPO; Ofcom; GLD; HMRC; DIT; and The Scottish Government.
