This conference will discuss next steps for data protection in the UK.
It will be an opportunity for key stakeholders and policymakers to assess priorities as the new government begins its work, and options going forward following the Data Protection and Digital Identity Bill having fallen preceding the general election.
Delegates will consider the future for legislation and regulation, and implications for the economy, citizens’ rights and international relationships.
Areas for discussion include:
- legislative and regulatory options in the new parliament
- stakeholder, governmental and regulatory priorities
- data adequacy and considerations for the future of data exchange with the EU and globally
- the impact of AI and innovation on requirements for the UK’s data protection regime
- potential changes to data protection governance
- unresolved legislative issues
Delegates will consider potential implications for data protection of innovation, including AI and the increased role of automated decision-making, along with issues with new data tracking technologies, and possible implications for commercial research. We expect discussion on the rise of new data-orientated business models, as the Information Commissioner’s Office consults on ‘consent or pay’ business models.
The conference will also be an opportunity to discuss the UK’s international data relations, looking at the UK-EU adequacy deal in light of the new Government’s focus on growth as a key priority, and signalling a willingness to explore closer ties with European partners.
Delegates will assess how potential reform could affect the UK’s adequacy status and influence trade agreements and international relationships, with discussion on next steps for achieving high standards of data protection rights.
Further sessions examine issues around the administrative burden of data protection, the potential for adjusting the definition of personal data, and the future for safeguarding related to online tracking and profiling, including use of personal data by political organisations.
There will also be a focus on the impact of data protection regulation on businesses, with discussion on potential regulatory framework changes and alterations to governance powers, and the impact on the UK economy, consumers and personal data rights.
