This conference looked at next steps for supporting the UK’s creative industries, in the context of the Creative Industries Sector Vision published by DCMS in June.

We are pleased have been able to include keynote sessions with: Sir Peter Bazalgette, Chair, Creative Industries Council; Alastair Jones, Deputy Director for the Creative Industries, DCMS; Tom Fiddian, Head of AI & Data Economy Programmes, Innovate UK; Tracy Harwood, Professor of Digital Culture, Institute of Creative Technologies, De Montfort University; and Heather Carey, Director, Work Advance; and Research Lead, Creative PEC.

It was an opportunity for key policymakers and stakeholders to assess priorities for investment and innovation to support ambitions for sector growth and development.

Delegates examined targets set out in the policy paper, what will be needed to achieve them, and options for industry and government collaboration to realise the potential of creative industries as a high growth sector across the wider UK economy.

Further sessions considered priorities for those working in the creative industries, including workplace culture, accessibility of industry, improving diversity and career pathways, and supporting regional growth through the Creative Industries Clusters Programme.

Overall, areas for discussion included:

  • policy aims: assessing ambitions in the Creative Industries Sector Vision - what is needed to reach the targets for GVA and job creation by 2030 - timescales - investment and funding
  • workforce: addressing current and emerging skills gaps - Local Skills Improvement Plans - education - careers guidance for the future creative workforce
  • job quality: exploring implications of findings in the PEC’s Good Work Review - priorities and strategies for promoting sustainability and security of work
  • staff wellbeing: strategies for improving accessibility and inclusivity - the role of the Creative Industries Independent Standards Authority in tackling bullying, harassment and discrimination
  • creative clusters: progress and next steps - further investment priorities - supporting creative industry growth outside London and the South East - the role of local government and stakeholders
