The discussion brought out key perspectives on what is needed to underpin the ongoing viability of public service media (PSM), including funding, accountability, and diversity -  as well as to ensure that the sector is representative of the society it serves and continues to be relevant in the digital age.

This conference took place in the context of the DCMS Committee report - The Future of Public Service Broadcasting - which made a range of recommendations aimed at enabling public service broadcasters (PSBs) to compete more effectively with on-demand streaming services, including proposals for increased collaboration.

The discussion followed the Ofcom Small Screen: Big Debate study of public service broadcasting as well as the impact of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which led to changing viewing habits among audiences, including a greater appetite for on-demand services.

This was an opportunity for key stakeholders and policymakers to consider the impact of these developments on PSBs, as well as possible next steps to upgrade the future prominence of public service media in the UK.

We were pleased to be able to include keynote contributions from:

  • Professor Catherine Johnson, Professor in Media & Communication, University of Huddersfield; and Special Advisor, DCMS Select Committee Inquiry into the Future of Public Service Broadcasting
  • Clare Sumner, Director, Policy, BBC
  • Seetha Kumar, Chief Executive, ScreenSkills

The conference brought together stakeholders with key policy officials who attended from the Cabinet Office; the CMA; the DCMS; DIT; the Home Office; the National Audit Office; and Ofcom.
