Delegates at this seminar discussed the commercial opportunities and challenges for the performing arts sector.
It took place in the context of the launch of the DCMS Select Committee inquiry into the work of the Arts Council England following evidence presented of disproportionate geographical distribution of arts funding, and as policymakers consider the next steps for supporting the creative economy and the introduction of limited tax relief for commercial and regional touring theatre productions from September, announced in the budget.
Delegates examined the next steps for both public and private funding, including ways forward for strengthening relationships between subsidised and commercial performing arts organisations, as well as how the sector can use digital technology to diversify income streams and grow audiences - through digital marketing, live-screening initiatives and social media - in light of a study highlighting the positive impact of digital activity on revenues.
This conference brought together government representatives with arts bodies, local councils, community groups and charities; corporate sponsors, investors and private philanthropists; creatives, and representatives from television, film, performing arts organisations; academics, commentators, technologists and other interested parties.
